Well, hello there. I’m sure everyone was tuned into FOX last night as the second GLEE episode of the season took us all by storm. Not only was it the second episode of the season, it was also the second GLEE episode to center around the music of Britney Spears. And Britney Spears’ music was built to be sung on GLEE. There is no question about that. I wonder if Britney had the show in mind when she recorded all of her songs? I doubt it, because that would mean she also owns a time machine and that, most likely, is not the case? Anyways, the music was extremely strong and fit into the episode extremely well.
Just like the last Britney themed episode it was also all about or favorite hilarious Cheerio, Brittany S. Pierce! I seriously love the dialogue that comes out of that girl’s mouth. She always has the best one liners and always makes me double take with how ridiculous the things she says are, ridiculous in the best way, of course. The episode starts out strong with Brittany telling us all about how she was held back and how that she now finally knows how Jesus feels way up in his house at the North Pole, because she’s on top of the world. Pretty soon Blaine asks her what she doing and she tells him that she thought she was doing a voice over! Yes, I was already laughing!
But the laughs did and didn’t last long as Brittany and the Cheerios do a cheer camp version of “Hold It Against Me”. Then all the sudden Brittany is getting kicked off the Cheerios by a frustrated Sue for her bad grades. Starting her second senior year off in a not so pleasant manner! Thankfully Sue is still getting a few cameos on every episode so far. What would we do without her? Oh, and Santana left Brittany behind and so she misses her girlfriend too. Things were not looking up for Brittany all the sudden.
Rachel is still not getting along with Cassandra July and we find out why Cassandra was deemed crazy in the Broadway world. Cassandra is a really awesome character and I can’t wait to see where the writers take her. I’m already a big fan! All this drama is why, Rachel goes to her super attractive new pal Brody, to help her prove that she’s sexy. After brain storming with her new roommate Kurt!
So, Brittany is in a huge funk and Mr. Schue and Emma have a plan to get her back in the game with a Britney Spears themed glee club week. It seems like Mr. Schue and Emma aren’t really being featured much so far this season. I hope that changes soon, I kind miss them. To kick things off in glee club, Arty and Blaine sing a little Britney “Boys” and Justin Bieber “Boyfriend” mash up. I think it’s so great to see Brittany out of her Cheerios uniform, though I have no idea why she wears that awful hat most of the episode? It works though.
Our new girl Marley admits that she has feelings for our new resident bad boy Jake, which causes Unique (now fully committing to his female persona), Tina and Marley to bust out “Womanizer” proving just what Jake is. Then Tina leaves the girls behind and joins Sam and Joe for a wonderful downplayed, harmonized version of “3” in glee club. And Brittany decides that if she can’t have her high pony that she might as well shave her head, which doesn’t end up happening.
Jake and Marley meet up out on the bleachers and have a heart to heart through the brilliant mash up of Britney’s “(You Drive Me) Crazy” and Aerosmith’s “Crazy! I could rave about this mash up for ages and about how cute Marley and Jake would be together, but I won’t. Later Jake proves that he’s a really interesting and dynamic character when he stands up for Marley’s mom in the lunch line! I have a feeling that Jake will be the character that will always surprise us.
Rachel (in New York) does this super sexy rendition of “Oops!… I Did It Again”. Or at least I thought it was sexy, but Ms. Cassandra July didn’t. Gosh, she’s such a hard ass. Oh, and then back at William McKinley Jake finally meets his older brother Puck, in a big ansty, Puckerman style intervention! Which was just the right amount of Puckerman in one room, if you know what I’m saying?!
The New Directions sing “Gimme More” at a school function. And due to Brittany not wanting to sing live, they lip sync, and Brittany drinks a lot of orange juice and eats a lot of Cheetos while “performing”. It was one of the funniest scenes the whole night. And I was a big fan of that moment!
Then it was a download of pep talks. Mr. Schue said his piece about the whole lip syncing scandal. Cassandra and Rachel had that “show business is tough” talk. Sam finally figured out that Brittany was staging a comeback and needed to hit rock bottom first. Deeming that the blondes should stick together and becoming my favorite pep talk of the night.
On the love side of things Brody shows up at Kurt (he went to New York, remember?) and Rachel’s huge and awesome apartment (I could live there)and told Rachel that he has feelings for her and Marley finds out that Jake is dating Kitty (the new Cheerio). We will just have to see if Brody can sneak into Rachel’s life and demote Finn and if Marley can win Jake over? But in true GLEE fashion Marley ends the episode by singing a sad version of Britney’s “Everytime”, because she’s still alone.
“Britney 2.0” was a great episode. Full of wonderful music and some strong character plots! It wasn’t quite as funny as I was expecting though. Somehow the funny moments that happened were still funny enough to make up for the fact that a lot of serious stuff went down. Giving us a well rounded gem of an episode. If the rest of the season keeps going the direction it’s been headed, this could be the best season yet!
Be sure to meet me back here on Wednesday for a look at next week’s GLEE music!
