After a bit of snow dusted the ground the morning, some fans lined up outside Union Transfer as early as 12 in the afternoon to get in line for Ben Howard’s sold out show. The Englishman was out in support of his latest release, I Forget Where We Were, on what has become a mostly sold out tour.
A later show, starting around 8.45pm, Ben lit up the stage with a roughly 13 song set that included mostly songs off the latest release with a few of the older favorites. Songs like “Conrad” and “Small Things” were included earlier on while crowd favorite “Black Flies” was saved until almost the end.
A diverse crowd ranging in age, gender and personality packed Union Transfer and kept the vibe positive and appreciative of the music being played. With songs that were longer than the typical three and a half minutes, many included intricate guitar solos and Ben’s unique style of playing.
Spending time both seated with an acoustic guitar and standing with the electric, the show flowed with very little talking between songs. Typically, Ben does not play an encore or limits it to one, but he surprised most with a smile as he transitioned into “The Fear” as a second encore.
