The last girl group I remember really liking was the Pussycat Dolls and that was back when I was admittedly too young to be saying “don’t cha wish your girlfriend was hot like me.” Since then, it’s been a while since an all girl group has swept the nation the way acts like the Pussycat Dolls and Spice Girls dominated back in the 90′s and early 2000′s. Until now, at least. In the midst of the boy band revival, the latest X Factor phenomenon, Fifth Harmony, is bringing back the girl group, steadily stealing hearts, and after talking with them earlier in the week, I have to admit that I’ve had their debut EP Better Together on repeat for days.
Better Together is a fun collection of five tracks that hit number 2 on iTunes after day one. Having co-wrote on the EP, the girls of Fifth Harmony feel that it represents who they are- which certainly comes across musically and personally. Fifth Harmony is a sweet and down to earth group of five young women. Honestly, it’s impossible not to believe in them after hearing them talk about the EP and their career. “It’s a lot of no sleep and go, go, go and not seeing our families, but it’s so worth it when we see it when we see people saying they love the EP and coming to our shows.” I think the coolest thing about bands and artists like Fifth Harmony is that, starting out as contestants on the X Factor, audiences and fans live their rise to fame with them, and see five regular people become something bigger than themselves. It brings the fans that much closer to them which is evident by the fierce loyalty between Fifth Harmony and their fans, about whom they say “Our fans inspire us everyday and they really just touch us.”
Fifth Harmony does everything for their Harmonizers both here in the states and around the world. After finishing up their first American headlining tour, Fifth Harmony is gearing up to “harmonize America,” as they put it, on the Neon Lights Tour with Demi Lovato. Remarking that “it’s gonna be different than anything we’ve done,” they are looking forward to getting to tour more. Comparing touring to The X factor, Fifth Harmony notes that tour feels more comfortable because “the people who are there are there for you.” While there are no current plans for a world tour yet, the girls are excited to go abroad one day to see the many dedicated fans outside the US. Till then, the girls are releasing a Spanish version of their EP for their Latin fans “We have a lot of Latin fans so we kind of just wanted to give them like a treat.” The small world syndrome and globalization of music that comes from social media leads to artists pushing themselves creatively, resulting in wonderful works like Fifth Harmony’s EP, Juntos, out November 11th.
”It’s a lot of no sleep and go, go, go and not seeing our families, but it’s so worth it when we see it when we see people saying they love the EP and coming to our shows.”
Fifth Harmony is definitely ready to take over the pop world and is adding some serious girl power back on the scene with a fresh new attitude. Before wrapping up our chat, they took some time to answer a few Harmonizer questions from Twitter. Read their answers below, and if you need me, I’ll be shamelessly jamming to one of my new favorite songs “Don’t Wanna Dance Alone” by Fifth Harmony.
TWITTER Q&A
@amirasaid: What was the most fun song for Fifth Harmony to record?
FH: Oh I said it was “Don’t wanna dance alone” because that was the first song we recorded right after we got off the show and it was like our baby. I think another one also would probably be me and my girl just because it’s just about having fun and it’s pretty ridiculous and you don’t even have to focus on like there’s no vocal challenge really so it’s kind of just like yayyy
@5Hismyboo: How was their experience creating the Spanish version of the album?
FH: It was incredible. It was really amazing to see the songs have a new life that they brought. The Spanish language is so beautiful it was amazing to recreate the songs in that way but also it was an experience for us.
@fifth_harmonei: What are the most common gifts each girl has received?
FH: Pretty much anything across the board. Like we get mix tapes, we get phone chargers. We get everything. Especially the cards I feel like those are the cutest because they make it from scratch and like its great. I think it’s really cute when they make poems and stuff. And sometimes they’ll write songs, it’s so cute or they’ll tell us how you know what their life stories are and how we’ve kind of become a part of that which is an honor.
